Do optical cables break easily?
TOSLINK cables are generally made with the low cost 1 mm plastic optical fiber (POF). The worst thing is probably sharp kinking which can fracture the fiber, followed by bending in sharp or tight turns* which can break or fatigue the cable causing an immediate or delayed break if allowed to remain.
Are optical cables durable?
Durability. Durability is always a key consideration. Optical fiber is recognized to be a long-lasting material. If you get it from a reputable company, you can expect it to last a long time.
Can fiber optic cables break?
If when installing the fiber optic infrastructure the cable gets bent or deformed, the core can break or worse, crack. The damage can cause signal distortion and an interminable list of faults. If this happens, you better save yourself the trouble and just cut the cord in pieces.
Is optical cable sensitive?
This means that cutting just one cable could disrupt service for a large number of businesses and individuals. Fibers are also sensitive to bending, making laying fibers around corners a tricky business. Fiber optic networks are also susceptible to radiation damage or chemical exposure.
Is optical Fibre fragile?
Fiber optic cable has typically been categorized as fragile, like glass, which the actual fiber is, of course. The impurities absorb as much as 1,000 times more light than optical fiber and concentrate stresses that reduce its strength and can cause cracks. Optical fiber is made by an entirely different process.
Can optical cables fail?
Like all other cables, the joint between the plug and the cable tubing can come undone. If this happens, the cable may stop working. Further, fiber optic cables are much more sensitive to crimping than standard wire cables. Even pinching the wire too much can cause the fiber optics to get damaged.
Is optical audio dead?
And while the optical cable was the digital audio transfer method of choice for decades, it has started to disappear. More and more products are dropping the optical connection. This once cool cable is dying a very slow death.

Can fiber optic cable bend?
Bend radius is the curvature an optical fiber can bend without damage or shortening its lifespan via kinking. The result of kinking the fiber is known as bend loss: a loss of signal strength that may compromise the integrity of the data transmission.
