Power word kill has nearly no counter in 5e, save someone always using a death ward on everyone in the group. If the party lacks someone with the spell, your out of luck, all you can do is pray you never go below 100 health against any caster who might use it.

Do you have to hear power word kill?

The target doesn’t need to see or hear the caster. Since there is no save, magic resistance short of outright immunity to spells doesn’t help against this spell.

Can you counterspell power words?

You utter a word of power that can compel one creature you can see within range to die instantly. If the creature you choose has 100 hit points or fewer, it dies. Otherwise, the spell has no effect.

Power Word Kill does kill a PC with fewer than 100 hit points without a save. However, a quick calculation shows that there would be many high level PCs that have more than 100 hit points at full health. “Kill” means they simply die. No saving throws, no death saves; the target is rendered dead.

Does death ward protect against power word kill?

It does nothing. Death ward’s second effect cares about what’s causing your death. For death ward to save the barbarian, the cause of death must be (1) instantaneous, and (2) not something that deals damage. For example, it’ll save them from power word: kill but not from disintegrate.
