With the passage of SB907, NDs gained the ability to practice medicine in California. Although this was a great victory for our profession, in order to ensure that licensure occurred, we had to make some initial compromises.

Do naturopathic doctors go to medical school?

Naturopathic physicians: These are also called naturopathic doctors (ND) or doctors of naturopathic medicine (NMD). They usually attend an accredited four-year, graduate-level school. Traditional naturopaths: These practitioners don’t attend an accredited naturopathic medical school or receive a license.

Can Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine write prescriptions?

NDs complete rigorous education in pharmaceutical drugs during their four-year, science-based medical education and they may prescribe medications when indicated as allowed by state regulations. However, naturopathic doctors typically don’t prescribe drugs at the first sign of symptoms or trouble.

Acupuncture is a kind of treatment commonly practiced by naturopaths. Many naturopathic physicians recommend acupuncture. Some states license naturopaths to provide this treatment.

Yes – Naturopathic doctors can order any laboratory testing or imaging needed to help diagnose or manage your condition. This includes blood testing, stool testing, X-rays, MRI, CTs and many other types of labs and imaging.

Can NDs inject Botox?

Yes. Intramuscular injections are within the California ND scope of practice, and injectable nutraceuticals are part of the ND independent formulary.
