Does it matter which way an ignition coil is wired?

Does it matter which way an ignition coil is wired?

Being a transformer it must have pulsating dc on the 12 volt primary coil, generated by the points in the distributor, to generate high voltage on the secondary output. A transformer is not affected by polarity, since it is an alternating current device, so it matters not what the primary polarity is.

Does polarity matter on an ignition coil?

The coil will work efficiently and put out the same voltage either way it is hooked up, but the spark plugs are more sensitive when it comes to polarity, hence our second and more important definition. Coil polarity should be such so as to provide negative polarity to the spark plugs center electrode.

What wires go to the ignition coil?

The primary circuit wire goes into the coil through the positive terminal, loops around the primary windings, then exits through the negative terminal. An electrical transformer, the ignition coil is considered the heart of the ignition system.

What happens if you hook up spark plug wires wrong?

When the firing order is wrong or delayed, the engine does not run properly. The spark may be delivered to the cylinder when there is no fuel/air mixture or before it is properly compressed. One symptom of an incorrect firing order is the engine does not run. Turning the ignition does not start the engine.

Does the positive wire on a coil go to the distributor?

Connect the positive coil wire to the positive terminal of the ignition coil. Locate the negative coil wire. On most cars made before 1980, this wire connects to the points switch, which is located on the distributor. The distributor connects all of the spark plug wires.

What is reverse coil polarity?

Checking Ignition Coil Polarity Connect the negative lead to the (-) negative terminal and the positive lead to the engine block. If volt the needle swings down to the negative side and gives a negative reading, your coil is hooked up backwards. To correct the polarity, simply reverse coil primary leads.

How do you tell which side of a coil is positive?

Crank the engine over (do not start it) and the needle of the voltmeter should show an upward swing to the plus or positive side (do not worry about taking a reading). If volt the needle swings down to the negative side and gives a negative reading, your coil is hooked up backwards.

Which side of coil does tach wire go?

Tachometer installation can be as simple as connecting the tach’s sending wire to the negative side of the ignition coil, while other ignition systems feature a dedicated tach sending circuit. In either case, installing the tachometer incorrectly can cause significant damage to both the tach and ignition system.
