Pseudomyopia occurs when a spasm of the ciliary muscle prevents the eye from focusing in the distance, sometimes intermittently; this is different from myopia which is caused by the eye’s shape or other basic anatomy.

How do doctors test for myopia?

Nearsightedness is diagnosed by a basic eye exam, which includes a refraction assessment and an eye health exam. A refraction assessment determines if you have vision problems such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia.

How is pseudo myopia treated?

Multidisciplinary treatments, including strong cycloplegics for relaxing ciliary muscle spasm, psychological consultation, and modification of near work environment, are needed for patients with pseudomyopia because of their inability to voluntarily relax the ciliary muscle spasm [7].

Your eye doctor may use a microscope called a slit lamp to examine the front of your eye. The microscope focuses an intense narrow line of light on your eye. The slit lamp provides a magnified, 3D view of the eye and allows your doctor to detect any small abnormalities.

In optometry, this shows nearsightedness, but it is not permanent. In most cases pseudomyopia occurs in children between the age of six years old through adolescence. It is less common after that age. In adults, pseudomyopia is rare because the gazing mechanism, so common in children, diminishes as people age.
