What happens if you are too flexible?

What happens if you are too flexible?

Hypermobility can cause pain in the knees, fingers, hips, and elbows. Hypermobile joints can put you at a long-term risk of arthritic changes due to wear and tear on the cartilage. If you’re hyperextended, it’s important to strength train to build up the muscles surrounding your joints, in order to stabilize them.

Is being very flexible bad?

Excessive flexibility can be just as bad as not enough because both increase your risk of injury. Once a muscle has reached its absolute maximum length, attempting to stretch the muscle further only serves to stretch the ligaments and put undue stress upon the tendons (two things that you do not want to stretch).

Flexibility is highly related to performance of an athlete. In athletes this leads to decreased speed of movement, decreased strength and power, and can lead to injuries. Regular flexibility training helps maintain range of motion, strength of muscles, and prevent injury.

Are flexible muscles weaker?

Muscles that are over stretched are less able to output power, for a short period. While they are longer they are also more prone to injury – not so good if you do a high impact sport. Dynamic stretches are better for keeping blood around the body and brain, giving you that ‘buzzed’ feeling.

Can you force a split?

Beyond the momentary pain caused by forcing the body to do activity it isn’t ready for, athletes can hurt themselves attempting to put their bodies into supraphysiologic positions – like the splits. Muscles, hamstrings, and joints are all involved, and could be at risk for injury.

Are oversplits bad for dancers?

In extreme positions, such as oversplits, this becomes extremely dangerous as it loosens the ligaments around the hips and knees. Thus, your muscles and ligaments can not react quick enough to movements; leading to injury. This is also a danger of over-stretching.
