What is a good brace height on a bow?
Anything greater than 6 inches falls into the more forgiving category. Of course, brace heights greater than 7 inches produce the most forgiveness. But, given the advancements in bow technology, I see no reason a solid shooter couldn’t shoot as well with a 6 1/2-inch brace height as a 7-inch brace height.
How much does brace height affect accuracy?
The average new compound bow has a brace height of approximately 7″. Bows with shorter brace heights (5-6.5″) will be faster but less forgiving to shoot. Bows with longer brace heights (7.5-9″) will generally shoot slower but will be more forgiving to your errors.
What happens if brace height is too high?
If set too high or too low in relation to the manufacturer’s recommendation, it can result in a noisy bow and erratic arrow flight. When the bracing height is too high, it can also throttle the bow’s performance – and if the bow is shot ‘under-braced’ for long periods, it will result in damage to the limbs.
Does brace height affect draw weight?
In other words, draw weight/brace height should have no effect on your ability to anchor/extend. The TALLER brace height should make the the bow a few pounds HEAVIER and reach its stack point (if that’s what’s happening) earlier.
Do you have to twist a recurve bow string?
Putting in twists will make the string effectively shorter (think about twisting up a piece of string) which will increase the brace height; taking twists out will effectively give you a longer string and therefore smaller brace height. To do the tuning – start with the lowest sensible brace height and shoot 3 arrows.
How do you measure your draw length for a recurve bow?
To measure your draw length, stand with your back to a wall stretching your arms out against the wall. Measure the distance from the end of your middle finger to the end of your other middle finger, basically the length of both arms, hands and chest. This measurement, minus 15 then divided by 2, is your draw length.
How do you find your draw length?
What happens if your brace height is too low?
A low low brace height will have the arrow leaving the string on the curve of the string oscillation. It will not shoot as forgiving, will have more vibration and disruption of the forward momentum and the arrow cast will not be an energy efficient out of the bow.
Does brace height affect spine?
The higher the brace height, the higher the spine requirement of the arrow will be, which is similar to bringing the arrow closer to center shot. SO, if your arrows are shooting a bit stiff, raise the brace height.
What makes a bow forgiving?
A forgiving bow is one that is less affected by user error. If you torque a bow while gripping a longer brace height will not be as effected as a short brace height. The longer the bow the harder it is to torque and better it will hold on target.
How many twists can you put in a recurve bow string?
With that said, strings can work well with a fairly wide range of twists, for example for a 68” string, anywhere from 20-60 twists will produce acceptable results as long as the bow’s brace height (string height) is correct.
