It’s never too late to learn anything. There are people in the band I play in who started learning their instrument in their sixties. And some of them are better than people who have played since they were kids! There are plenty of community bands out there that play “Middle School” level pieces.

To catch up on your studies you might need to rethink completing everything on that long to do list. A simple way to prioritise what’s important is to use the 4Ds system. Take your to do list, or make one with everything you think you need to do. Make sure every area of your life is included not just studying.

Create a catch-up plan
- Make a master calendar. Buy or print a large calendar, and stick it on your wall.
- Make separate lists for each of your subjects.
- Combine tasks into one list of main priorities.
- Create the catch-up plan.
- Spread work out over a few days.
- If things aren’t working, try another study method.
Does the music school you go to matter?
School doesn’t matter. Teacher does. This rule applies to every stage of your musical career. The reputation of the school or institution that you attend will not make you better and doesn’t usually get you a leg up on being hired. It’s all about the teacher.
