Why is dehydration of alcohol carried with H2SO4 and not with HNO3 and HCl?

Why is dehydration of alcohol carried with H2SO4 and not with HNO3 and HCl?

In case of HCl elimination reaction will compete with nucleophilic reaction due to Cl- ions which is a good nucleophile ,HCl and HNO3 are not good dehydrating agents wheras H2SO4 is.

Why is H2SO4 used instead of HCl in dehydration?

Originally Answered: Why won’t HCl or HNO3 dehydrate alcohols to an alkene like H2SO4, or H3PO4? Sulphuric and Phosphoric acids are oily covalent liquids that become ionised through hydrolysis. Hydrogen Chloride is a gas in its covalent form and Nitric acid an unstable powerful oxidising agent in their pure forms.

Why concentrated sulphuric acid is used in the process of dehydration of alcohol?

Concentrated sulphuric acid is used for the dehydration of alcohol because sulphuric acid is a strong oxidising agent. It also has a strong affinity towards water thus absorbing water. When concentrated sulphuric acid reacts with alcohol, it oxides some alcohol to carbon dioxide and reduces itself to sulfur dioxide.

Why is conc H2SO4 used instead of conc HNO3?

The sulphuric acid is used in the preparation of hydrogen chloride {HCl} and nitric acid {HNO3} because it is a non-volatile{ it has a high boiling point} and HCl and HNO3 are volatile acids.

What type of alcohol do we get when we do hydration of alkenes with h2so4?

It will give a primary alcohol or secondary alcohol or tertiary alcohol according the alkene molecule.

Which alcohol Cannot be dehydrated to form alkenes?

Methanol cannot be prepared by the hydration of an alkene.

What type of alcohol do we get when we do hydration of alkenes with H2SO4?

Is H2SO4 a dehydrating agent?

As well as being a strong acid, sulfuric acid is also a dehydrating agent, meaning it is very good at removing water from other substances.

How alkenes can be prepared by dehydration of alcohol?

Alkenes are obtained by the dehydration of alcohols. By passing the vapors of an alcohol over heated alumina. By heating an alcohol with concentrated mineral acid, such as concentrated H2SO4 or concentrated H3PO4. Anhydrous zinc chloride can also be used as a dehydrating agent.

Why the ease of dehydration of alcohols is in the order?

The order of the ease of dehydration of alcohols is: tertiary > secondary > primary. Secondary and tertiary alcohols are best dehydrated by dilute sulfuric acid.

Is conc h2so4 strong dehydrating agent?

Why is h2so4 used to prepare HNO3?

Concentrated sulphuric acid has a high boiling point (356°C). So, it is considered to be non-volatile. Hence, it is used for preparing volatile acids like Hydrochloric acid and Nitric acids from their salts by double decomposition.
