Should you use sealant on gaskets?

A general rule, if you are using gasket sealant, you don’t need a lot! Automotive applications commonly use gasket sealant alongside solid gaskets, as they are repairing older parts. Gasket sealant can be used to make cheaper gasket materials more robust, increasing adhesion and chemical/water resistance.

Do metal gaskets need sealant?

No, you don’t need a sealant, unless it is explicitly mentioned in an eventual installation guide. Some people still use sealant with those metal gaskets (with mixed results). In those cases it is essential to only add an thin film of sealant and wipe away the excessive amount.

Do you need RTV with a gasket?

Please note that RTV is not to be used on the entire gasket; the gasket should be installed clean and dry. RTV should only be used on the corners of the gasket and/or stepped casting areas that have a gap. Using a small amount of RTV will fill in those areas to assure a leak-free assembly.

Can I use silicone instead of a gasket?

That would be OK, you can also use instant gasket that is high temperature silicone at a push. Even normal bathroom silicone sealant is temperature resistant to about 250 degrees C. If the gap is too big between the pipe and slip-on can, try packing it with kitchen foil as well.

It depends on the application, and the gasket material. Sometimes, gluing the gasket to one surface and greasing the other surface works very well. A good quality carb gaskets will probably work dry. A smear of grease generally won’t hurt and will hold the paper in place during assembly.
