How an ONT fits into your home network. An ONT device is necessary for your home network ​only if​ you have fiber installed. This is because, with fiber-optic Internet, you cannot use any modem or router.

Do I need modem connect to ONT?

With an ONT you do not need a separate modem to communicate with your ISP. So, instead of plugging a device straight into a modem for a solid wired connection on your fiber network, you can plug your computer directly into an ONT.

How do I hook up my ONT cable?

Using another Ethernet cable, plug one end into any of the LAN ports on your router. Take the other end of the cable and plug this directly into your device. Take one end of an Ethernet Cable and plug this in to the LAN port of your ONT. Use the other end of the cable and connect this to the WAN port on your router.

What is Ont modem?

An ONT is an Optical Network Terminal. This device connects the fibre that has been wired to the outside of your house, to your modem. Your modem will plug into your ONT so it should ideally be: close to a power socket (the ONT is powered by a 12v adapter)

How do I setup my Huawei ONT?

Log in to the web configuration page.

  2. Enter the login user name and password (printed on the nameplate of the Huawei ONT). Click Log In.

The ONT (also called the modem) connects to the Termination Point (TP) with an optical fibre cable. It connects to your router via a LAN / ethernet cable and translates light signals from the fibre optic line from your TP into electronic signals that your router can read.

An ONT is an Optical Network Terminator, it connects the ISP’s (passive) optical network with your LAN. Normally, it includes a router as well but in theory it could just be media converter.
