Can your OCD subtype change?

While almost every OCD subtype is categorized by both obsessions and compulsions, purely obsessional OCD (pure OCD) can vary. To an observer, someone with pure OCD seems to have no compulsions. And unlike other subtypes, the theme of their obsessions can be ever-changing.

Can OCD obsessions come and go?

It is common for people with OCD also to have a diagnosed mood disorder or anxiety disorder. Symptoms of OCD may come and go, ease over time, or worsen. People with OCD may try to help themselves by avoiding situations that trigger their obsessions, or they may use alcohol or drugs to calm themselves.

Do OCD obsessions go away?

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms generally wax and wane over time. Because of this, many individuals diagnosed with OCD may suspect that their OCD comes and goes or even goes away—only to return. However, as mentioned above, obsessive-compulsive traits never truly go away. Instead, they require ongoing management.

How does OCD progress over time?

Obsessive compulsive behaviors may be driven by irrational fears, upsetting thoughts, or disturbing images. In most cases, OCD will develop gradually. Patients who develop an abrupt, and sudden onset of symptoms, may have an underlying organic cause, such as an infection, triggering OCD-like behaviors.

Do obsessions last forever?

Most people probably mean the first option, but we can answer both at once. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a chronic condition. This means it won’t fix itself and is generally not cured completely. So to the first question: OCD does not go away on its own, without treatment.

Can OCD vary in intensity?

The onset of OCD is typically gradual, but in some cases it may start suddenly. Symptoms fluctuate in severity from time to time, and this fluctuation may be related to the occurrence of stressful events.

Can OCD worsen over time?

They may even rationalize their repetitive behaviors as “not that bad”, since they haven’t started interfering with work or school. However, left untreated, OCD symptoms often become worse over the years. They can even become so debilitating that the sufferer experiences: Isolation.

How long does a OCD obsession last?
