NEW YORK (CBS) – Pushing that “door close” button won’t make your next elevator trip any faster. Federal law requires that the doors stay open long enough for those with crutches or a wheelchair to get in the elevator.
That’s because most of the door-close buttons in U.S. elevators don’t actually work. In fact, they’re programmed that way. Only firefighters are able to close elevator doors manually through the use of a key. It’s important to note that there are exceptions to this rule, though.
How does an elevator door open and close?
Elevators use two different sets of doors: doors on the cars and doors opening into the elevator shaft. The doors on the cars are operated by an electric motor, which is hooked up to the elevator computer. Many elevators have a motion sensor system that keeps the doors from closing if somebody is between them.
Why are there two close door buttons on elevator?
They do this to reduce the wear-and-tear on the elevator, particularly the doors, which reduces costly service calls and extends the life of the elevator. It also reduces liability for accidents caused by misuse of the button.
