Is the M1 chip better than A12Z?

The M1 is, according to benchmarks, about 40\% faster than the A12Z. That’s the same difference as between an 3rd gen and 4th gen iPad Air (A12 vs A14 and the M1 really is an A14X or Z). The bigger difference may be in storage speed and in RAM as these new iPads can have up to 16 GB of RAM.

For intense computational operations and multi-core tasks, the A12Z is the better chip, even though it is older and slower. More cores allow the A12Z to outshine the A14 when it is able to use them. For the ‌iPad Pro‌’s target market, a chip with better multi-core performance makes sense.
