At any given time there are thousands of Reservist Sailors deployed around the world. I’m in an Expeditionary Unit so they are always taking volunteers to deploy, however, it’s expected that your rotation will be approximately every three years, for a time period of approximately one year.
What is being in the Navy Reserves like?
The Navy Reserve is a valued partner of the Navy’s active-duty component. It offers citizens the chance to serve on a part-time basis, training near home until called to Active Duty. A reservist can pursue a full-time civilian education or career, or obtain special military training while serving.
Reserve retirement is sometimes called non-regular retirement. Members who accumulate 20 or more years of qualifying service are eligible for reserve retirement when they reach age 60 or, in some cases, a lesser qualifying age.
When members of the Navy Reserve get deployed, they are considered to be on Active Duty status, earn active duty pay and benefits, and sailors who are on a deployment lasting 120 continuous days or more earn the ability to take advantage of a Navy Tuition Assistance (TA) Program.

Do reservists get pensions?
Points are still earned by participating in drill, attending annual training and completing active duty, among other eligible categories. National Guard or Reserve members with 20 or more qualifying years are eligible to receive their monthly retired pay starting at age 60 or earlier based on qualifying active service.

Reservists must have completed 20 years of qualifying service to be eligible for retirement. A qualifying year of service is a complete retirement year in which the member earned a minimum of 50 retirement points.
