Why is it recommended that you not edit as you write?

When we first get the idea down onto the page, we’re far too attached to it. We therefore can’t edit it as well as we could have if it had been written by someone else. Once we’ve finished the piece and can view it as a whole, then it becomes a lot easier to get a feel for what works and what doesn’t.
