For every new skier, falling on skis is an inevitable right of passage. Chances are if you’re a new skier and not jumping off objects then once you start to fall, you’ll either land on your side, back or front.

How often do you fall while skiing?

Depends on what I’m skiing – quite often. Usually 4-5 times a day on average I’d say. 2-3 times an hour if I’m on teles.

Will I have forgotten what I have learnt? No, I don’t think that you can entirely forget how to ski. But it can take some time, from hours to days, to ‘get your ski legs back’. This is about confidence and timing as much as anything else.

But think about it: As a beginner, you won’t (or shouldn’t) be going too fast, snow is softer than you’d expect, and falling is a part of learning. You’ll fall. A lot. The only way to learn is to fall and just because you’re skiing shouldn’t make it scary.

Turn your feet and legs parallel whilst starting to bend your knees and dig into the snow with the inner edge of both skis and push through your heel. The more you dig into the snow, the quicker your stop. Release the angle of you skis and flatten them towards on the snow so you don’t fall backward.

If you have fallen on a steep face and are sliding with no hope of stopping, try to turn your body and dig your elbows and forearms into the snow to slow yourself down. Basically you want to stop as soon as possible if you’re in steep, dangerous terrain to avoid injuring yourself further.
