They have always been reasonably fluent in English as a second language and comfortable singing in English. When ABBA started neither Anni-frid or Agnetha spoke English and they performed their early English songs phonetically.
Why does ABBA sing in English?
The simple answer is that it was not a requirement at the time that entrants should sing in their native languages, and songs in English are more readily understood by more people around the world than songs in Swedish or any other language. However, ABBA did record Swedish versions of their songs.
