How do you break in a new calligraphy nib?

Here are some ways you can prepare your nib for optimum use and happy calligraphy!

  1. Naked Flame. Place your nib into a nib holder (so you don’t burn your fingers!).
  2. Toothpaste. Using a soft toothbrush, wet the head to soften the bristles.
  3. Potato. Obtain any regular potato and push your nib halfway into the potato.
  4. Saliva.

Why is my calligraphy nib not working?

Simply submerge the nib (disassemble the pen and only submerge the nib) in the water and very carefully rub the ink off with the toothbrush. Let the nibs dry completely before you use them again! If the ink isn’t flowing correctly after cleaning the nib may be damaged or even rusty.

How long does a calligraphy nib last?

With the more delicate nibs such as my favourite, Leonardt Principal EF, sometimes you can get a good batch that will last for 40 -60 envelopes (or calligraphy applications). However other times you will need to change into a new one after just 15-20 applications of calligraphy.

If a nib is damaged it can prevent the ink from flowing. The tines on smaller nibs and especially small pointed nibs can easily overlap or get bent. Overlapping tines can usually be pushed back in to place. Often it will be necessary to replace nibs which have bent tines.
