Should you stack thermal pads?

Should you stack thermal pads?

By stacking thermal pads your intruducing more air pockets and layers between the disapater and the heat source. So it’s generally a bad idea to stack pads because it adds more air pockets. So it’s generally a bad idea to stack pads because it adds more air pockets.

Can you double layer thermal pads?

Registered. Yes you can but the performance will be decreased as there will be air trapped between the thermal pads no matter what you do.

Do thermal pads work as well as thermal paste?

The big advantage to thermal paste is its ability to be easily spread. It will conform to uneven surfaces very well, and fill large gaps more evenly than thermal pads. Another advantage is that with the ability to apply it as a thin layer, thermal paste can provide better thermal conductivity then the thicker pads.

Are thinner or thicker thermal pads better?

Yes, thicker is worse in terms of heat transfer. Doubling the pad thickness doubles the thermal resistance.

How thick are GPU thermal pads?

*We suggest using 1.0mm pads if 0.75 is not available….RTX 3080 thermal pad thickness.

Is there anything better than thermal paste?

Thermal pads are a lot easier to install than thermal paste. However, very small gaps will still remain between the processor and the thermal pad. These small air gaps ensure a slightly lower thermal conductivity, as air is less heat conductive. It should be noted that thermal pads are a one-time solution.

Do thermal pads melt?

Thermal pads are made with paraffin wax that melts once it gets hot. When it melts, it will fill in the microscopic valleys in the heatsink with wax. To minimize the permanent contamination of the mounting surface with wax, the thermal pad should be removed before it is used and melted.

How thick should my thermal pad be?

What is the best thermal pad thickness?

Anything above 8 W/mK should do the job. You can check how easy it is to change thermal paste here (we will prepare a separate guide for thermal pads soon). It is not recommended to use 2x 1mm thick thermal pads together to create one 2mm pad. This will lower performance.

Should I replace thermal pads on GPU?

Over time, thermal pads – like their paste equivalents – become less effective. To avoid your machine overheating and to limit thermal throttling, it becomes necessary to replace them.
