Can you put any processor in any computer?
Motherboard model and revision level Just because a motherboard has the proper socket doesn’t mean it can necessarily accept any processor that uses that socket. Before you begin an upgrade, verify the compatibility of your motherboard with the upgrade processor you are considering. (See Computer Motherboards.)
Can I install any processor in my desktop?
Can I directly install a new CPU to the old motherboard with an old CPU? It depends. Sometimes the BIOS is not compatible, so you’ll need to update, then if your chip set is not correct, you basically can’t do anything except upgrade your motherboard.
Will a new processor work with any motherboard?
CPUs are typically optimized to work with one type of memory or the other, and you cannot mix them on a motherboard since they require completely different sockets. Furthermore, even within the same family, RAM modules typically get faster and your old RAM may not be able to keep up with a new CPU.

Will a PC processor fit in a laptop?
No. Upgrading your laptop’s CPU, in general, is not a good idea. You’ll probably just find yourself with BIOS and thermal issues–not to mention that the CPU wouldn’t even be compatible with the motherboard.
Can you swap processors between laptops?
And while we hate to be the bearer of bad news, in most cases, you can’t upgrade your laptop processor. Most processors are soldered right into the motherboard, presenting a challenge to the typical user, as you’ll need to remove the CPU and swap it out for a new one.
