The North Sentinel Island in the Andamans, home to the Sentinelese tribe, is one of the world’s forbidden islands. If reports are to be believed, the Sentinelese tribe has been living on the island for more than 50000 years under the protection of the Indian Government, and entry is strictly prohibited for visitors.

Do the Sentinelese have boats?

The Sentinelese hunt and gather in the forest, and fish in the coastal waters. Unlike the neighbouring Jarawa tribe, they make boats – these are very narrow outrigger canoes, described as ‘too narrow to fit two feet in’. These can only be used in shallow waters as they are steered and propelled with a pole like a punt.

The South Sentinel Island is a small isle 27km away from Little Andaman. The closest airport to the South Sentinel Island is Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair. From Port Blair, you can take a ferry or helicopter to Hut Bay, Little Andaman. The ferry may take upto 6-8 hours.
