Honestly I prefer calling by the first name. There are lots of other ways to respect your boss, calling him Sir or Boss is not the only way. In America (United States of), if you aren’t calling someone “Sir,” you’re probably referring to them by their first name, unless you’re from some parts of the South.

To me, boss sounds both nonchalant and sarcastic. I would rather address my supervisor as Sir. If you work in an industry (like Information Technology) where addressing by first name is permissible, that’ll be my preferred choice. , Have worked in many environments, for great to mediocre to terrible managers.
