Why did my power cord burn?

Why did my power cord burn?

Sometimes outlets are overburdened with appliances, loaded power strips, etc., and the demand is beyond what the electrical wiring was designed to carry. When this happens, the wiring will become hot and possibly ignite or melt anything that comes into contact with it, including the plastic outlet.

Can PC cables burn?

Sometimes the cables can smolder slowly for a long time. It wouldn’t take much current to burn the cable once it’s damaged. Count your blessings that the cable did not burn worse than that or catch something else on fire or damage the system.

Can I use any plug for PSU?

Any cable will work. A 1,000W power supply (80\% efficient) will pull about 10 amps at full load. That’s well within the specs of any of those cables. Some compaines do sell heavier duty cables, with larger wires in them, but there’s no need in this case.

Why would a plug burn in a socket?

Old Outlets When it reaches a point where the area of contact is much smaller then when the outlet was new, then the resistance builds up which creates heat. When the heat gets excessive it may cause a burning smell and/or burn marks, or smoke marks on the outlet or the cover of the outlet.

What are PSU cables?

The primary task of the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is to provide your motherboard with power. This is done via the 20-pins or 24-pins connector. A 24-pins cable is backwards compatible with a 20-pins motherboard, often this cable can be split into 20- and 4-pins (like in the image above).

Can a failing PSU damage other components?

Yes absolutely! cheap units without built in over current/voltage/power protection, under voltage protection and short circuit protection will damage your mobo, ram, and other components.

Are all PSU plugs the same?

The device-side of all PC cables is standardized. Some vendors might use 6-pin connectors for their PSU-side peripheral headers (identical to what’s found on PCI-e cables, because it saves cost), others will opt instead for a wide-format pin-out for the same.

Does PSU cable matter?

If you are referring to the 110 VAC power cord there is no problem as to which cord you use. However, the cables that connect from the PSU to the motherboard, devices, graphics card, etc. are not inter-changeable from one brand to another.
