Most artists who use pencils prefer knives (usually an X-acto knife) to sharpen their pencils as you can easily leave a very long section of graphite exposed for shading and such. Most commercial sharpeners cut at too much of an angle and the point rapidly becomes useless.

How do you get the blade out of a pencil sharpener?

Use a small Phillips head screwdriver, a watch makers one or maybe one of those little ones you get in Christmas crackers sometimes. Unscrew the tiny screw holding the blade into the sharpener and once it’s removed the blade will drop out. Do be careful of course, they’re sharp!
