How does SCR operate?

SCR stands for silicon controlled rectifier. It is essentially a switch with no moving parts. It consists of a semiconductive path and what is called a bridge. When you apply voltage across the bridge, the path becomes conductive and carries the current until something interrupts the current ahead of the SCR.

How does a SCR voltage regulator work?

The positive half cycle waveform going out from the bridge rectifier causes the gate current for the SCR to pass through the resistor R1, which triggers ON the SCR. As soon as the SCR switched ON it starts charging the C1 filter capacitor. When the positive half – cycle ends the SCR quickly turns OFF.

How does the load connected in SCR?

When the required voltage rating exceeds the SCR voltage rating, a number of SCRs are required to be connected in series to share the forward and reverse voltage. When the load current exceeds the SCR current rating, SCRs are connected in parallel to share the load current.

To turn-on of an SCR, a positive gate voltage between gate and cathode. This gives rise to a gate current where charges are injected into the inner p layer of the device. This effectively reduces the voltage at which forward break-over occurs.
