Do resistors reduce power consumption?

Do resistors reduce power consumption?

Resistors consume power and dissipate that power by converting it to heat (and sometimes light).

When two bulbs are operated on same voltage supply having power 60 W and 100 W then 100 W bulb has less resistance than 60 W?

60W bulb has higher resistance than 100W bulb if both the bulbs were rated for same voltage. So higher voltage drop will be across a 60W bulb. In parallel voltage drops will be same across both the bulbs but current through it will be inversely proportional to the resistance.

Does voltage affect power consumption?

The higher the voltage the higher the power consumption in the case of a pure resistance load. A reduction in voltage does not affect the energy used by the domestic appliances which use resistive loads except in devices such as kettles and toasters which will take longer to do their job due to atmospheric losses.

Does potentiometer reduce power consumption?

No, not essentially. Any way you look at it, using a variable resistance is still an electric load. In a power circuit, you won’t use a potentiometer/rheostat to reduce voltage.

Do resistors affect battery life?

Since the voltage doesn’t change, when the resistance goes up, the current and the power go down. So, adding series resistance to the circuit will make your battery last longer.

How much current does A 60-watt light bulb draw?

A 60 Watts bulb draws 0.54 Amps to operate. A 80 Watts bulb draws 0.72 Amps to operate.

Is 120V same as 60-watt?

120V is a voltage rating and power rating is required along with Voltage rating to design it. It can be 10W , 40W, 60W , 100W for standard household usage.

Which has a larger resistance A 60 W?

With the same current, the bulb with the bigger resistance will dissipate more power. Since the 60 W bulb has the larger resistance, it will be brighter.

Which bulb has higher voltage drop?

In series, both bulbs have the same current flowing through them. The bulb with the higher resistance will have a greater voltage drop across it and therefore have a higher power dissipation and brightness. In parallel, both bulbs have the same voltage across them.
