Is it safe to dry-fire my pistol? It is safe to dry-fire our center fire pistols. You would want to use a snap cap or plug if extensive dry-firing is done.
Should you slap the magazine?
Tap – to tap the magazine. This is to ensure that the magazine is properly/completely inserted in the firearm so that it feeds properly. It does not constitute ‘smacking’ the magazine, as this can irreversibly damage the magazine’s lip.

For anyone not familiar with the terminology, racking the slide refers to vigorously drawing the slide all the way back in order to eject a chambered cartridge or spent casing and/or allow the slide to strip a new one from the magazine and jam it into the chamber.
Can you fire a gun by racking the slide?
If it is unloaded and double action the gun will click every trigger pull. If there is no round in the chamber, racking the slide will feed a round into the chamber and the pistol can be fired. Rack it again, and the unfired round will be ejected and another fed, and the pistol can be fired.
Why do people slap magazines?
The reason some people slap the magazine in is to get it to seat. In many cases this is excessive however and may push the magazine to far in making it unable to feed the round, difficult to remove and possibly damage parts of the firearm such as the ejector.
